Are you a candidate for surgical weight loss?

Who is a candidate for bariatric surgery?

  • Patients with a BMI >35 and an associated health condition (like high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, etc)

  • Patients with a BMI >40

What is bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is surgery to change your stomach and/or intestines to suppress your appetite, make you feel full, alter food absorption, and change hormones to improve your health.

What types of bariatric surgery are performed?

  • Sleeve gastrectomy – the stomach is reduced in size and the large part of the stomach is removed from the body.

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass – the stomach is reduced in size and the intestines are rerouted to the new small stomach.

  • Lap-Band/adjustable gastric band – A plastic band is placed over the stomach and a port is brought out just under the skin.  This procedure is rarely performed anymore.
